If art doesn’t stir
you, what difference does it make what else it does?
Frankly, I hope my work provokes questions. What matters most is not what the viewer’s precise response is, but that there is a response. I see forms both melding and conflicting. For 10 years as a psychotherapist and lecturer, I focused on wellness and relationships. The relationship of the various shapes are in the beholder’s eye, even changing over time as the viewer’s life perceptions change.
When working specifically with stone, a material that has survived for millions of years, its very essence provides a dynamic sense of hope, strength and survival, the same themes I emphasized in my therapy practice. Stone lends itself to the contemplation of the origins of life. In carving it one discovers the spirit of the material and the properties peculiar to it. I think there is a mystique inherent in stone and a sense of eternity. I also feel dignity in stone and am deeply committed in my desire to uncover it as such. It’s a perfect material—solid, reassuring of origins and eternity—for my compelling attraction to hammer away to create images that give order to the chaotic wind that sometimes consumes the mind. I am blessed to have had nature as my intimate partner in this pursuit.
Creating art keeps me centered in “the moment”. What a gift that is.
